Rhode Island Sting

All Coaches and Volunteers meet USA Hockey certifications with age-appropriate training and safe sport/ background check for the safest developmental environment.

 

DIRECTORS:

Sara DeCosta 

She is the co-Founder of the Rhode Island Sting in 2012.  An Olympic Gold and Silver Medalist Goaltender from the 1998 and 2002 Olympic Games.  She is a Providence College and USA Hockey Hall of Fame Member.  Currently, she serves as the assistand coach of St. George's School.  Previously, she served as the assistant coach for Nobles and Greenough and Harvard University.  Sara has coached with the Rhode Island Sting at 8u, 10u, 12u and 14u levels over the past 8 seasons.  Sara is our Goalie Coach and Mentor.  Sara graduated from Providence College with a degree in Social Sciences.

Vicki Movsessian 

She is the co-Founder of the Rhode Island Sting in 2012.  She has coached with the Rhode Island Sting at 8u, 10u, 12u and 14u levels and skills coach for over the past 8 seasons.  An Olympic Gold Medalist from the 1998 Olympic Games.  Vicki is a Providence College and USA Hockey Hall of Fame Member.  She served as the assistant coach for Northeastern University and Providence College.  Vicki graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Business Administration.

Kate Ammatuna

10u coach and goalie coach. She is entering her 2nd season with RI Sting. She previously coached in other youth organizations with 8u and 10u teams. Kate is a graduate of Norwich University with a degree in Psychology and played hockey and lacrosse during her time there. She also attended Sacred Heart University where she earned a Master of Science with honors in Applied Psychology.

Bill Russo:

Currently a coach with the Rhode Island Sting 10u. Bill was the Head Boys Hockey Coach of Pilgrim High School for nine years. He later spent four seasons as the Toll Gate Boys Head Coach. Bill also spent two seasons as a coach for the Providence College men's club ice hockey team. Bill is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island where he played four seasons for the URI Ice Hockey team.

James Bethune – 

Jim is the Rhode Island Sting 2021 Coach 12u and Skills Coach.  Coach Jim is entering his Fourth Season with the Rhode Island Sting, having coached both 10u and 12u teams.  In addition to his affiliation with the Sting, Jim has also served as an assistant coach with the Providence Hockey Club (PHC), as well as a head coach of a U12 team with the Steamboat Braves Hockey Club in Steamboat Springs Colorado.  Having grown up in Cranston Rhode Island, Jim is a graduate of Bishop Hendricken High School, where he played on their hockey team. Jim also attended and graduated from the University of California - Santa Barbara.  When not coaching (or working), Jim enjoys spending time with family and friends; and like all parents of athletes, driving around and cheering on his own children.

Kevin Lopes:

Kevin is an assistant coach with the Rhode Island Sting 2021 12u Program.  He also served as the Head Coach of the RI Sting 12u during the 2020 Summer League.  This is his first year as a RI Sting Assistant Coach but previously coached 8 seasons at the Instructional, Mite, and Squirt levels with the SWS Chiefs Youth Hockey Program and the Bruins Fundamentals Program.  Kevin served as Captain of the Somerset Blue Raiders Hockey Program and was a founding member of the Bridgewater State University Club Hockey Program.  Kevin graduated from Bridgewater State University with a degree in Marketing.  He currently serves his community as a Law Enforcement Officer and volunteers much of his time within his community and its youth.  His passion for developing youth hockey players is based on three principles:  1)  HAVE FUN!  2)  Learn the game 3)  Make lasting friendships!  His coaching philosophy is strongly guided by the USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM) and highly suggests that every athlete and parent should familiarize themselves with it and use it as a guide for their child's future success in the greatest sport in the world, Ice Hockey!  

Leo Phenix

Entering his 6th season with the organization, Leo is currently a 12u Rhode Island Sting 2021 coach.  Across those years Leo has worked with 8u, 10u and 12u teams.  Leo focuses on goalie development and fundamental hockey skills across the teams for age-appropriate development.  He grew up in Southeastern Massachusetts and has lived in RI for more than a decade.  His degree is in Biology from UMASS Amherst.

Cody Loughlean

From Innisfail Alberta Canada to New England, Cody enters his first season coaching with our 14u age group.  Cody played Junior Hockey for the North Battleford North Stars of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League prior to committing to Providence College.  He played a successful four-year college career at Providence College, captaining the team his senior year.  After graduation, Cody played in the Dallas Stars organization for the Oklahoma City Blazers.  After his retirement, he was the Assistant Coach at Ohio University while obtaining his Master’s Degree in Coaching Education and Athletic Administration. He returned to the Rhode Island area and was the former Assistant Coach at Providence College.  He and his wife Sarah have a daughter Lily, and 2 sons Wyatt and Cooper.

Brendan Whittet 

Rhode Island Sting 2021 Coach 14u and Skills Coach.  He is entering his 8th Season with the Rhode Island Sting.  Brendan has worked with 8,10,12 and 14u Teams.  He is the Head Coach of the Brown University Men’s Hockey Team. He also served as an assistant coach at Dartmouth, Brown and Colby.  He is a graduate of Brown University with a degree in Organizational Behavior and Management.

Seth Francis

Currently one of Rhode Island Stings 14u coaches. Seth is USA Hockey certified and has been coaching with the Rhode Island Sting for the past 5 seasons at the 10u, 12u and 14u age groups with over 15 years of experience as a hockey coach as well as other sports. Seth grew up around the game playing youth and has always had an interest in coaching and developing young athletes watching and helping them grow. He has an extensive medical background with his work as a full-time firefighter. Seth currently serves on the USA Hockey’s Rhode Island affiliate board of directors as the Girl’s director and Player Safety Coordinator.

Leo Phenix

16 and 19

Kurt Carter

Rhode Island Sting 2021 Coach 16u/19u.  He is entering his 5th Season with the Rhode Island Sting.  Kurt has coached both girls and boys at the 8u, 10u, 12u, 14u, 16u and 19u girls age groups.  Kurt is the Head Coach of the Portsmouth Abbey Girl’s Hockey Team.  He was previously the Head Coach at Davenport University Women’s Ice Hockey team in Grand Rapids, MI as well as the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid, NY. He was the inaugural coach at Medway/Ashland Girls Hockey in Massachusetts for eight seasons.  He speaks at USA Hockey coaching education symposiums and is passionate about growing girl’s hockey. He is a graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in Accounting and an MBA in Finance from the University of Massachusetts.
